Working out with Richard Simmons was SO MUCH FUN! If you are in the LA area, you have to check out his classes at his studio in Beverly Hills – definitely the most fun I have ever had in an exercise class! – Picture the exact opposite experience of a tranquil yoga workout.  I laughed so hard at Richard’s antics during class that I could feel my abs working overtime.  I get to skip crunches tomorrow. 

 

Underneath his campy exterior, Richard Simmons has a heart of gold. He actually asked for silence, then turned to me and asked, “Who are you? You have such a gentle spirit.”  I replied with my name.Richard asked if I do voice-over work and I told him that I had starred in Broadway musicals for 15 years. So, when he asked which shows I had done, I responded that I had played Linda Ronstadt’s sister in The Pirates of Penzance with Kevin Kline, had co-starred with David Cassidy in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and had sung Memory in CATS.  And then, standing in the middle of about 200 sweaty exercise enthusiasts, Richard asked me to sing Memory. So I belted out a few bars, at which Richard and the class applauded enthusiastically.

He asked what I do now and I told him and my fellow “sweaters” that I had invented My Workout Wake UP Call – Motivational Alarm Clock Messages — patented, daily 5-minute messages that motivate listeners to wake up and workout, for which I received another round of heartwarming praise. Then, as instructed, we picked up our weights and carried on with the class.

I wasn’t the only one who was touched by Richard’s openhearted kindness. At the end of class, he called up two women to the front of the studio who were celebrating their birthdays today and gave both of them birthday gifts.

And then Richard gave all of us a gift straight from his heart. He said he was aware that some people in the class had been hurt by people who had never apologized for doing them wrong, and that they were still hanging on to the hope they would someday receive an apology.

Richard said, “Often those people who haven’t asked for our forgiveness still haven’t forgiven themselves for hurting us. So how could we expect an apology, when they haven’t even forgiven themselves?”

So, simply and powerfully, Richard told them that he was so sorry they had been hurt, and asked his students to forgive and let go of holding on to the hurt. I glanced around the room and noticed that many of my classmates had tears in their eyes.

Richard Simmons “Sweat” class was my fantasy exercise class — a real full body workout, inside and out. If my abdominal muscles were not sore from laughing so much, I’d think I had been dreaming!

Sleeping pills are among the most widely prescribed medications today. As Dr. Oz points out, when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, this is not good news. According to researchers, a good night’s sleep includes peaks and valleys, transitions from light sleep to deep, or “R.E.M.” sleep. A sleeping pill just makes you crash. Boom. That’s it – no variance from light to R.E.M. at all, which is absolutely crucial to replenishing brain cells and waking up feeling rejuvenated.

Brace yourself! The most commonly reported sleep medication side effect, in addition to dependency, is sleep binging. Users sleep walk to their refrigerator and consume everything in it, while sound asleep. And even worse, a reported “side effect” is sleep driving while still in dream land. Sleep drivers wake up to the real life nightmare of having just crashed their cars in their sleep. When Kerry Kennedy, the ex-wife of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and daughter of the late senator, Robert F. Kennedy, was arrested for drugged driving last summer after having crashed her car, she told a police officer she might have mistakenly taken an Ambien instead of her daily thyroid medication. The toxicology report confirmed the presence of a sleep medication in her blood the day of the accident. Kennedy plead not guilty to driving while ability impaired.

The most important minutes of your day: Research shows that our minds are the most open the first and last few minutes of the day, when we are transitioning from consciousness to subconsciousness and vise versa. These are invaluable times to program our minds with positive thoughts, images, affirmations and meditations. Ironically, most people start their day with blaring buzzers and tuck themselves in at night with the negative news on TV or with the stimulating glare from their electronic devices. If you don’t want your subconscious mind to have you tossing and turning all night, then it is best to steer clear of the negative noise and e-energy before bedtime.

I partnered with Psychoneurologist, Dr. Sylva Dvorak to find research-based, safe and natural sleep solutions, without the risky side effects of sleep medications. Aromatherapy is one of the many enjoyable, safe and natural ways to relax your body for a good night’s sleep. Rub a few drops of essential lavender oil on your feet before going to sleep. Essential lavender oil is known for its relaxing properties. Chamomile is another calming essential oil which can be used in this way, as well. As an alternative, you can  sprinkle a drop or two of the essential oil onto your pillow, or rub it into your temples before closing your eyes. Some people prefer to spray their bedrooms lightly with a lavender mist. Most health food stores carry essential oils and testers, so you can test them for yourself and see which one feels most relaxing for you. As an added bonus, you and your bedroom will smell wonderful!

Behind the Scenes Video – Recording My Good Night Messages- Habits to Sleep Well

Daytime lifestyle habits such as eating and exercise play a role in how well you sleep. Here are some recommendations to support you in getting a good night’s sleep.

  • It’s best to have a lighter meal at night and not eat too late in the evening. Heavy, rich foods at night take longer to digest and acidic, spicy foods can cause heartburn so best to avoid these types of foods at least 2 hours before bedtime.
  • Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health and for a good night’s rest! The nicotine in cigarettes is a stimulant and can make it harder for you to fall asleep. It can also disrupt your sleep since you can experience nicotine withdrawal at during the night. There are numerous smoking cessation programs available. Get the support you need; it really is one of the best things you can do for your health.
  • Exercising during the day will also help you to sleep better. Participate in exercise that you enjoy at least 5 times a week for 30-40 minutes such as brisk walking, swimming, and biking.
  •  Gentle stretching or doing gentle yoga poses can help to relax you before bed.

TEDACapella Choir Sings Grateful TEDAholic by Robin Palmer at TEDActive2013 -Ode to TED

 

I wrote this song called Grateful TEDAholic, which the TEDAcapella Choir was scheduled to sing on Friday morning on the TEDActive stage, thanks to TED and TEDActive amazing staffers, Nick, Katherine and Kelly.

The choir was bumped at the last minute for a couple of TED Ed videos and we were asked to sing at the goodbye party at the pool later that day, which we did. You can’t hear us singing in the pool party video very well, as we couldn’t get mikes and the partiers were having fun! :)

So the choir recorded the song by some nearby bushes, since so many TEDsters had enthusiastically asked to hear it. If you too are a TEDAholic, please sing along! The lyrics are below. Enjoy!
