Best-Selling Author Victoria Moran Shares Value of “M.E.” in My Weight Loss for Life Wake UP Call Messages (MyWakeUPCalls.net)

In one of my favorite My Weight Loss for Life Wake UP Call® messages from best-selling author, Oprah Show guest and coach, Victoria Moran, she shares her favorite acronym: M.E.  She asks, “Who are you going to take care first thing every day? – ME! And how will you do that? – M-E: “m” for meditation, “e” for exercise…”

Victoria goes on to discuss her own experience with meditation. (She shares her tips on exercising in another My Weight Loss for Life Wake UP Call® message.) When Victoria was in her 20s and struggling terribly with food and weight, and looking everywhere for help, she wandered into a Christian Science Reading Room. The man there suggested meditation. She remembered thinking, “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about: that doesn’t burn any calories.” She says that she was voraciously consuming food she didn’t need in a vain attempt to calm herself down and block out feelings she didn’t want to feel. Victoria realized, “That wise man was trying to give me a way to get calmness, and peace, and the courage to be with those uncomfortable feelings and not have to eat to stuff them down.

Meditation can do that. It also boosts your immunity, improves your relationships, and makes you younger. No kidding! A research study found that people who meditated regularly for 5 years or longer were, on average, 12 years younger physiologically that the control group that didn’t meditate. This is pretty amazing stuff & it works when you work it.

So here’s what you do. Commit that this morning, and every morning for the next thirty days, you’re going to take some quiet time. Serious meditators go 20 minutes, but starting with ten or even five minutes is okay.

You can certainly use your quiet time the way you want: for prayer, or writing in a journal, or for the formal meditation that all those studies show is beneficial on so many levels. You simply pick a focal point and bring your awareness back to that word or phrase as you sit quietly and breathe slowly.

You can try “I’m okay as I am.” (inhale “I’m okay,” exhale “as I am.”) Or a phrase I use a lot is: “All is well.” I inhale, “All is…” and exhale, “well.” Try that a few times. Breathe in, “All is,” and breathe out “well.” …Once you get into the habit, you can get to this beautiful place in your own psyche with just a few slow, deep breaths in the midst a busy or stressful day.

You can do this at that time of day when you often reach for something to eat that you wish you hadn’t… or at stoplights… or when your boss or your teenager is pushing all your buttons. And it’s okay if your mind wanders. Just bring it back. Keep breathing. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Because, like you and me and the rest of us, it’s already perfect, just the way it is.”

In-home gadgets to keep you out of doctors office

In-home gadgets to keep you out of doc’s office
by Connie Midey – Sept. 15, 2011 11:08 AM
The Arizona Republic

Health devices for home use – most of them goof-proof, affordable and available without a prescription – can help you stay in tip-top shape between medical appointments.

“There’s no substitute for visits with your health-care provider,” says Denise Link, a women’s-health nurse practitioner and clinical associate professor at the Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation.

“These devices are additional aids. People who self-monitor have better outcomes because they’re more involved in their care day-to-day.”

Choices range from heart-rate monitors, some worn like a wristwatch while exercising, to automated external defibrillators that restore the heart’s rhythm to such pedometer-like gadgets as NewYu that measure your movements and calories burned.

Here are some of Link’s top picks for in-home devices.

Medical-alert system
“Senior citizens or any people living alone without someone looking in on them need one of these systems in case of a fall or injury,” the nurse practitioner says. “These alert others – when you can’t – that you need help.”
Example: Push the “help” button on a Philips Lifeline Medical Alert Service device worn around your neck and a Lifeline employee will answer and assess your needs, connecting you with emergency services or a relative or friend. lifelinesys.com.

Electronic personal-health records
“Internet companies offer systems for storing your personal health-care information,” Link says. “These are data banks that you have control over, and they help you communicate with your health-care providers. If you’re at the hospital, they can access your information in an emergency. You can choose to give your password to a trusted person in the event you can’t communicate.”

Example: Microsoft HealthVault is a free online site where you can organize, store and, perhaps, share your and your family’s health information with doctors or others. microsoft.com/en-us/healthvault.
Medicine organizers
“Get a lock box for controlled substances,” Link says. “A lot of teens will tell you they get their drugs to take to parties from their home medicine cabinet.
“And if you’re taking multiple medicines, a pill-organizer box will help you remember what you have to take, the timing and whether you’ve already taken it.”
Examples: These include simple plastic versions labeled by day and available in most drugstores; vibrating or talking alarm watches; talking pill bottles for people who can’t read or understand medicine labels; a magnetic pill timer to stick on the refrigerator door; and the MedCenter System, a 31-day pill organizer with up to four reminder alarms per day. forgettingthepill.com and rxtalks.com.
Baby monitor
“Some are better than others,” Link says, “so check consumers’ reviews. Consider what’s appropriate for your needs, whether you live in a small apartment and are always just a short distance from your baby, live in a larger home or might put your baby down for a nap while you do yard work. If you get a model with wires, you want to be careful about where it’s kept because there have been cases of kids being injured or strangled.”
Example: Sony BabyCall nursery monitor has 27 channels to limit interference and two receivers with five sound-sensor activity lights. Its 900 MHz technology allows you to take the receivers a distance away and still hear activities in the nursery. sony.com.

Other useful home devices
Blood-pressure monitor. Patients who use a home monitor are more likely to reach target blood-pressure numbers than those who rely only on checks at their doctor’s office, research has found.

Example: Battery-operated Omron blood-pressure monitors measure systolic and diastolic levels and pulse rate, and store your last 60 readings. omronhealthcare.com.

Digital bathroom scale. In conjunction with a blood-pressure monitor, “an accurate bathroom scale helps people manage congestive heart failure,” Link says. Changes in blood pressure or weight signal that a prompt visit to the doctor is needed.

Example: The EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale, which measures up to 400 pounds, has an easy-to-read 3.5-inch LCD display and sturdy tempered-glass top. eatsmartproducts.com
Digital thermometer. With one of these on hand, you’ll have a number to relay by phone to your health-care provider. Laypeople don’t always know what constitutes a normal temperature in various situations, Link says, so it can be unwise to self-medicate without directions from your doctor or nurse.

Example: Exergen TemporalScanner uses infrared technology to measure body temperature non-invasively with a gentle stroke across the forehead, over the temporal artery. exergen.com.

For emotional health

My Wake Up Call Motivational Alarm Clock, although not in the must-have category of health gadgets, will get your day off to a positive start. It IS Possible to Wake Up – Katlyn Hayes Article at Social Tech Pop

It IS Possible To Wake Up!

Research shows that a person’s mindset when they first wake up in the morning helps set the tone for the rest of their day. So if you wake up hating the world….your day is going to suck. Starting the day with a positive outlook can feel challenging for most people these days.
Now a new technological resource called My Wake Up Call is helping users wake up positively focused on achieving their daily goals. My Wake Up Call Motivational Alarm Clock Messages are specially structured 5-minute motivating messages that wake a person up positively, instead of with an annoying buzzer or the often “alarming” news on the radio. Personally, when I wake up cranky it’s not because of the buzzer…it’s because I don’t want to wake up.

Anyway, My Wake Up Call has partnered with well-known wellness and motivational experts to create each month of messages. Customers can choose from more than a dozen different message topics, from ones that help you wake up and work out, lose weight, or feel well, to messages focused on prosperity, overcoming grief and more.

My Wake Up Call was created by former Broadway Star, Robin (Boudreau) Palmer. “I now have a family, with a typical, hectic lifestyle. I kept wishing for an affordable personal trainer to motivate me to wake up and work out in the morning, before the day’s schedule started. I knew the importance of starting my day right, and wanted an inspiring coach to wake me up positively.”

Each month of daily messages downloads to any iPhone/Smartphone or iPod, or is available on CDs for $9.95 – $19.95, or included with My Wake Up Call iPod Dock or CD Alarm Clocks ($59.95). The annual subscription series is available for $99.95. My Wake Up Call also has a free iPhone/iPad alarm app on iTunes.

At first when I heard about this alarm I thought it was kind of silly. However, if I had someone telling me to wake up and get to the gym everyday…well that would just be awesome!
